Seasoning pepper originates from Central and South
America. Ancient paintings on pottery used by Inka Indians show
that it was used more than 3000 years ago. The first European to
mention this plant was Chanca, personal physician of Columbus. He
was also the first to bring the new plant to Europe. It was first
raised in Spain as an exotic plant, but later was spread through
the whole continent and became popular as a seasoning plant for
it's fine taste and color.
In Central Europe seasoning pepper is used as a
spice from 16th century, mostly in Pannonian plain and the north
of Vojvodina. By the end of 19th century, red seasoning pepper was
raised on 170 hectares, mostly around the village Horgos.
Seasoning pepper is one of the most significant
seasoning plants. Its fruit is used for production of grounded seasoning
pepper. Basic ingredient of the fruit is its coloring material,
and it's content determines the quality of the fruit. Besides coloring
material, flavoring ingredients are also very important, for they
give that very special and characteristic taste and aroma to seasoning
pepper.
